Town with a population of 6,314 at the 2010 census. First settled in 1661 by the Dutch as New Dorp, the village was burned by the Esopus Native Americans in 1663 and rebuilt in 1669 as Hurley. Used as a temporary state capital after the destruction of Kingston by the British in 1777.
