Brazil / Bahia / Salvador

The main square of the neighbourhood called "Santo Antonio Alem do Carmo". The area was initially populated by small businessmen who were not important enough to live in the main town of Salvador. With the invasion of the city by the Dutch in 1638 the catholic church promoted the area to the status of neighbourhood far from the limits of the town ("além" in Portuguese).
In the last centuries the area had its moments of glory and decadence. Currently due to private investiments of foreigners and wealthy local investors, it is attracting the attention again as an elegant "old brother" of Pelourinho.
