Majestic Cinema at Chamberlain Street was one of the popular cinemas in town. It was the first cinema completed after World War II. Operating for more than 30 years, finally it lost the battle with video cassette that became so popular during 1980’s. It turned to be a video game center for several years, and then changed to be a furniture shop until today. None of the old cinemas in Ipoh survived in the wave of change. All have been converted for other purposes today.
The Majestic Theater in Ipoh, Malaysia was built in the late-1940's and finally closed on Feb 25, 1998. The theater was a single screen movie house seating 867 patrons with 626 downstairs and 241 in the large balcony. The Majestic Theater started out showing Chinese movies until 1983 when it diversifed into English, Malay, Hindi and Tamil movies. In 1983, it was also rented out to the 'Cathay Organisation' which kept the theater until its 3rd 5-year lease term expired in February 1998.
