Founded in the mid-1800's as a commercial shipyard for Whalers, the Greenport Yacht & Shipbuilding Co quickly grew to a prominent private yacht, fishing and Oyster boat builder on Eastern Long Island. During the heyday of commercial fishing in and around Gardiners Bay, Greenport Yacht & Ship Building made or repaired much of the fishing fleet which brought in nearly $2 million dollars of catch each year.

During the Second World War the yard's proven capabilities in the construction of wooden hulled vessels earned it several US Government contracts to build Minesweepers for the US Navy, and its proximity to US Shipping Lanes kept the yard busy in the repair, refit and upkeep of US Subchasers and convoy escort ships.

Following the end of the War, the yard returned to commercial shipbuilding and ship repair, something it continues to do today.
