Morrison IslandSmall uninhabited island on the western border of Volusia County, FL, surrounded by the St. John's River and a bend in the river known as Morrison Creek. Along the mainland opposite the creek to the northwest lies Morrison Bluff, classified as a "cliff" by US Geological Survey, with an elevation of 3 feet.
According to Kevin M. McCarthy's "St. John's River Guidebook" (Pineapple Press, Inc., 2004), the river's natural path originally followed what today is Morrison Creek. This flow was altered when engineers blasted out the neck of the island, clearing the St. John's current path so barges could avoid the treacherous curve around the island. Named for James Morrison, an English settler and land grant recipient from the 1700's who unsuccessfully tried to establish a plantation along the river to the north. The island has also been known as Tom Fools Island. geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=gnispq:3:::NO::P3_... Category: island uninhabited
