IBERDROLA Ingeniería is awarded a 1.7 MMUSD dollar contract to construct a combined cycle plant in Qatar.

IBERDROLA Ingeniería has been awarded a contract valued at over 1.63 billion dollars to build the largest combined cycle plant of the Middle East, to be located in Mesaieed (Qatar).

The IBERDROLA subsidiary will be responsible for the turnkey construction, within a period of 42 months, of a new electricity production plant, which will have six gas and three steam turbines and an installed power of 2,000 MW.

This combined cycle plant will be able to supply the entire population of Qatar, amounting currently to almost 900,000 people. The project will also increase the installed power on the peninsula by 55.5% over that estimated for the end of this year (about 3,600 MW).

The contract was awarded to the company by the Japanese multinational Marubeni, which won the international tender called by the company Kahramaa (Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation) and in which bids were also received from the Belgian Tractebel and the British International Power.

Delivery of the Qatar power station to the customer will be staggered. The first 1,000 MW of power will be started up in the summer of 2008; at the beginning of 2009, the installed capacity will rise to 1,600 MW; and in April 2010 the power output of the plant will reach 2,000 MW.

This contract is the largest ever achieved by a Spanish company in an Arab country, and the second achieved by IBERDROLA Ingeniería y Construcción in the Arabian Gulf, following the recent award of another 144 million-dollar contract in the United Arab Emirates to build a 225 MW open cycle plant. It would not have been possible to achieve either had an office not been opened in Doha (Qatar) in September 2004
