Mepkin Abbey Church

USA / South Carolina / Moncks Corner /
church, monastery, Order of Cistercians, Roman Catholic church

Mepkin Abbey Church, designed by the team of Ted Butler and Frank Kacmarcik, Obl.S.B. The Church received the 1995 AIA award for Religious Architecture.
The plan of the Church follows ancient Christian church design adapted to the Mepkin community. The narthex opens onto a truncated nave for limited seating for 40. The altar immediately appears at the center of the transept crossing, underneath the high "lantern" 50 ft. above the floor. This is the heart of the building both on the interior and the exterior.
The avoidance of statues, paintings, and art glass are all part of a deliberate visual discipline based on Cistercian Spirituality.

The Church features three main architectural elements: NATURAL LIGHT,The use of NATURAL MATERIALS, and BALANCED PROPORTIONS were achieved by designing the building according to a grid of 9’ 6”. The width and the height of the building, both in the interior and the exterior, stand in a ruling proportion, much the same as in medieval building practices.
