 office building, health care

385-foot, 24-story hospital/office building completed in 1967. Designed by Kahn & Jacobs to house both office space and telecom equipment as one of the several high-rise telephone centers in Manhattan, it was long-occupied by Verizon until 2014. The building was the first to use the 1965 addition to the city's plaza bonus regulations. Occupying a through-block plot, the rectangular, limestone-clad mass of the tower is split by an octagon of black glass, with the faceted portions pointing to the streets and lifted on columns from the elevated plazas in front.

It is now used by NYU Langone as an ambulatory care pavilion with a new interior by Ballinger. A semi-circular drive was designed and installed at 38th Street for patient drop-offs. It has an expansive canopy of metal and glass. The south facade on 37th Street is set behind a small plaza with seating and landscaping, and the ground floor features a wooden canopy.
