memorial, cenotaph
A memorial and cenotaph honoring the heritage and sacrifice of area coal miners, located in Roslyn, Washington. Created in 1996, Coal Miners' Memorial comprises three faces of a 5' high tile wall, inscribed with the names of miners, surrounding a bronze sculpture of young coal miner depicted in period attire (1908-1920) leaving the mine at the end of a workday. It sits atop a podium inscribed with the names of those that were killed. The memorial is located on the NE corner of East Pennsylvania Ave and North 1st Street, kitty-corner from The Brick tavern. The Heritage Club of Roslyn oversees the memorial, fund-raising for ten years to ensure its upkeep and restoration, which was required in 2006 as tiles were coming loose.
