"Sunken Orchard" (Oyster Bay Cove, New York)

USA / New York / Oyster Bay Cove / Oyster Bay Cove, New York
residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast

Estate home designed c. 1916 in the Georgian Revival style by George B. DeGersdorff for Fay Ingalls {attorney, capitalist, financier}. Ingalls served as a partner and founder of Holter, Ingalls & Guthrie law firm, vice president of Bath National Bank, president of Virginia Hot Springs, and director of Homestead Hotel and Cascades Inn. Innocenti & Webel designed the landscaping for Ingalls consisting of a courtyard, terrace, lawns, and formal gardens.

The house was eventually sold to Charles E.F. McCann {attorney, capitalist} who had James O'Connor add a pool, playhouse and indoor tennis complex. He also had Annette Hoyt Flanders design French Gardens which in 1936 won the Gold Medal of the Architectural League. Thedow handled the decoration. McCann served as a partner of the law firm of Douglas, Armitage & McCann, Assistant Attorney General of New York State and director of Broadway Park Place Co. which owned the Woolworth Building. In 1942, the estate's contents were sold at auction by Parke-Bernet. In 1960, the west wing of the home was demolished.

William Woodward, Jr. purchased the estate's former music conservatory and named it "The Playhouse". It is now owned and adaptively reused by the Society of Pius X.
