A census-designated place with a population of 5,181 at the 2000 census, centered on the old unincorporated town of Centerville, which was founded by Col. Elias Earle in 1811 when he established the first iron works in the South here, making guns for the federal government. The town itself was named for the plantation and township of Centerville, which were located at the center of what was once Anderson District.
