'Kokrajhar' is derived from the Bodo word 'Konkhrajhar' means a place known for 'Reeha' or 'Riha' cultivation. Reeha plant is used for Textile Industry. In medieval time, Kokrajhar is region was famous for 'Konkhrajhar' plants. So the name.
Kokrajhar is a district headquarters today with most of the population belongs to Bodo-Kacharis.
The Bodo Autonomous Council's Headqauretrs also rests here.
Kokrajhar was once a part of ancient -Prajya, Prassi, Ratnapitha, Kangoor, Rumi country. Rulers were from Danava, Ashura, Varmana, Salstambha, Pala etc. This region was also under the Pala kings of Bengal, Buyans, Koch, Mughals etc.
The American Christian Missionaries put their encampments here. The first modern press was established within the territory of Assam sometimes in A.D. mid-nineteenth century at Srirampur under Kokrajhar region.
Kokrajhar region is afmous for Bodo culture such as: folksongs, folk dance (Bagarumba, Kherai etc), traditional weaving (Dakhana, Arnai, Endis etc), pottery works etc.
This region is also one of the important Sport spots in the map of Assam.

i am from Amteka kokrajhar district,its a green village situaded in bhutan border,the village famose for betalnut firm,forest and other agriculture production.there are more than five rivers which began from Bhutan.there are a historical tempal "KAMADA"situaded on bank of river Beteni,the temple also known as Devithan. |
