Robben Island - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Once a British leper colony, this island became infamous as the prison of political opponents, most notably Nelson Mandela.

During the Second World War, the island was a primary defense position for Cape Town, and today one can still find underground hospitals and bunkers.

The name "robben " originates from the Dutch word Robben , which is seal in English.
The island used to have tall trees that were all harvested.

There was recent controversy surrounding the hunting of ( Exotic ) rabbits. The hunting was promoted to protect the natural Fynboss flora
