The reserve Tisata has been established by Government decree № 6663 of December 5, 1949 by the name of Tisova Barchina by the Ministry of Forestry with an area of 19 ha. Its purpose is protecting the largest natural habitat of Greek juniper (Juniperus excelsa) in Europe.
After actualisation the area with Ordinance № РД-42 from 19.01.2015 it is now 583.53 hectares.
