Former Lake Garnett Race Track

Lake Garnett is a 2.84 mile road course in the city park of Garnett in eastern Kansas. It was used by the SCCA for national sports car racing from 1959 to 1972. It is now used for shifter-kart racing.
The first event was sanctioned by the Kansas City Region SCCA in 1958, and the Lake Garnett Grand Prix became a fixture on the road race circuit in the early '60s, bringing a number of well-known drivers of the era. Perhaps surprisingly, in view of its remote, rural location, the races attracted numerous spectators (up to 50,000) to the small community. Difficulties of crowd control (the spectators rioted in 1963) and increasing safety concerns (the narrowness of the track, particularly over the dam, and the proximity to the lake) led to its demise as a sports car track.
