The museum, created as library-museum (ГБММ) in 1938, opened in 1938 on Gendrikov Lane, house 15/13 at the location of V.V. Mayakovsky's apartment from 1926.

In 1974 the Mayakovsky Library Museum moved from Gendrikov, 15/13 (renamed Mayakovsky Lane) and moved to Serov Proyezd, 3/6 (now Lubyansky Proyezd) by the decision of Executive committee of the Moscow Council. V.V. Mayakovsky's Bibioteka-museum was relocated to where the poet lived and worked from 1919 until his death.

On the fourth floor there is a memorial room of the poet where on April, 14th, 1930 at 10:15 Mayakovsky has shot himself in the heart with a revolver.
