On July 10th 1979, 2 planes collided 1000 feet above the park. One plane with three aboard was just leaving Detroit City Airport, and a Cessna 150 with two aboard leaving Windsor Airport. All five people were killed in the incident. The wreckage was scattered across the area with the majority of it landing in the park. Following the crash, the “Riverside Descent Area” was created, an area which planes can’t fly through without special permission because the approaches of Windsor and Detroit City airports.
The park was named after Harry Brumpton, former Parks and Recreation Commissioner (1959-1981)
