Big Beaver Road is equivalent to 16 Mile Road in Detroit's Mile Road system. It is also known as Quarton Road and Walnut Lake Road further west. In Macomb County, it is known as Metropolitan Parkway.

By its various names, it passes through the cities of Birmingham and West Bloomfield to the west, and Troy, Sterling Heights and Clinton Township to the east.
