Hrossaborg Crater

Iceland / Nordurland eystra / Reykjahlid /
mountain, volcanic crater / caldera, interesting place

From Frommers.com: Hrossaborg, a 10,000-year-old crater formed when rising magma heated groundwater, prompting a massive explosion of steam and rock. Hrossaborg was once used as a pen for rounding up horses -- thus the name, which means "Horse Castle."

This crater is a must-see, but it doesn't get a lot of publicity. After visiting the Dittifoss waterfall on route 864 (the eastern dirt road to Dittifoss) go west on Route 1 toward Lake Myvatn and look for Hrossaborg Crater on the left. You'll see the crater soon after crossing the suspension bridge across the river.
