Actually "Mass MoCA", but Wikimapia won't let me type it properly. Grr. Anyway, it's got nifty modern art 'n' stuff.

  • This is also one of the many facilities tha belonged to Sprague Electric. The company pulled up stakes years ago and most of these buildings sat in decay until the Mayor (Joh Barrett) secured funding from state and federal sources to renovate the facility into the contemporary art space that is there today. In its prime Sprague was one of the largest employers in the immediate area. When they left (combined later with the massive pullout of General Electric in Pittsfield) the city was hurt badly. Personally, despite the amount of income it brings to limited numbers of people, the Mass Moca did not adequately replace the blue collar jobs lost when Sprague pulled out. The area is still somewhat depressed. Don't get me wrong, Mass Moca is a good thing as it at least brought tourist dollars to the area. I just don't think that enough people are benefitting in the same economic way as they would have if Sprague had not left. Oh well.
  • I have a relative who worked in that building
