Opened in 1897 as the West Sussex County Asylum, designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield for West Sussex County Council. Between 2003 and 2009 the main buildings and wards were closed with only outlying villas remaining open. As of 2012 work is ongoing to redevelop the site to provide 700 new homes.
