Haleakala Crater

Dormant volcano last thought to have erupted in 1790. 3055 meters (10,023 feet) tall at the summit.

"Haleakala" means "House of the Sun".

Live camera view from the crater: banana.ifa.hawaii.edu/crater/

It is well worth going on a cycling excursion from the crater lip at over 10000ft down to sea level. The ride is all down hill and ends
at the sea shore some 38 miles away.

If you do the sunrise thing, plan on:#1 Being cold (It's 10,000 ft. and you didn't bring enough warm clothes) and #2 Taking pictures of the crater looking directly into the sun (the creater is east of the summit).

I spent the better half of the day here and couldn't get enough! If you want to be INSIDE the crater you can walk in or ride horses in. I did not (wish I could have). Our park service is to be commended on all they do there. It is more than BEAUTIFULLLLLLLLL !!
