Built by James Deering of International Harvester and completed in 1916, Vizcaya is one of the most beautiful homes turned museum in all of the U.S., second only to Hearst Castle in California. At a time when the total population of Miami was only 10,000, more than 1,000 laborers and artisans from all over the world were working just on the construction of Vizcaya. Deering's half-brother Charles also built a waterfront estate, about 8 miles south of Vizcaya.

The property was once much larger, including the neighboring hospital and mansions on either side.
