 pumped-storage power station  Add category

Generates electricity by first pumping water up Brown Mountain to a man-made upper reservoir 1100 feet above the lower reservoir, which was formed by damming the Schoharie creek. Then, during peek electricity needs (usually daytime), water is released down through the 27-foot diameter 1000-foot long vertical pipe to the powerhouse. The powerhouse can generate 1000 megawatts of electricity for about 8 hours, until the ~40-foot deep 50+ acre upper reservoir is completely drained. The complex has a visitors center and 2 state parks.
