Huaraz is the mountaineering capital of Northern Peru. It's a bustling market town with several streets of market stalls with low hanging canapys with ropes tied across the street that taller westerners have to bend down to get under. There is a wide range of wealth in Huaraz, from nicely furbished neatly kept hotels with lushous gardens to tatty men lying across the pavement. Western mountaineers are common here.

We stopped here for a couple of days because one of our team was feeling the altitude. I awoke in my hotel room to the clatter of the hooves of a small deer in on the 2n floor walkway outside my door, and found some locals (staff) chasing it toward the steps, but it leaped over the balustrade to the patio below, skittered into the far wall, breaking it's nub of an antler. While it was dazed from the impact, we quickly (crudely) taped the cracked but still attached nub in place before it scampered out of the courtyard and down the hillside. I got a couple of quizzical stares, perhaps saying, 'What'd you do with out dinner?'
