Founded in 1947 by Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai

Physical Research Laboratory is a national Indian center for research in space and allied sciences, supported mainly by Department of Space. This research laboratory currently has ongoing research programmes over astronomy and astrophysics, planetary atmosphere and aeronomy, earth sciences, solar system studies and theoretical physics.[1] It currently manages the Udaipur Solar Observatory and is located in Ahmedabad

PRL is located in the western part of Ahmedabad known as "Navrangpura".
Many other premier Academic Institutions such as Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA), Space Applications Centre (SAC), Sardar Patel Institute of Administration (SPIPA), Ahmedabad Textile Industrial Research Association (ATIRA) and Gujarat University are also located in this region.
