Medical Arts Building (Windsor, Ontario)

Canada / Ontario / Windsor / Windsor, Ontario / Ouellette Avenue, 1011

Erected in 1930, the 7 storey building was one of the first "tall" buildings in Windsor. The medical office building provided facilities for doctors for many years. It was the birthplace of the Windsor Medical Plan, which was the forerunner to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. Vacant for some time, the property has been recently purchased by a new owner who has proposed to convert the building into a 10 unit residential condominium.

Designed by J.R. Sculland, the structure received heritage designation from the City of Windsor in 1989. The art deco style building features a limestone facade crowned by an angular parapet. The front facade is enhanced by 3 vertical bays, an arched stone entranceway sheltered by a bronze and glass canopy, Corintian pilasters flanking the front door and carvings of the traditional medical symbol , the caduceus. The interior lobby is decorated with marble and decorative plaster.
