The Great Northern Elevator is presently the oldest Grain Elevator still standing in Buffalo, built in 1897 at the railhead for the Great Northern Railway. Renamed the Mutual Elevator in the early 1900s after infighting brought the Great Northern RR to collapse, the facility contains 30 bins of 38ft and 18 bins of 15.6ft diameter which feed and are fed by three marine towers located along the elevator's waterfront.

Purchased from Mutual Elevator in 1921 by the Pillsbury Company, the Elevators original warehouse was demolished and a concrete framed flour mill was constructed to serve the new owners in 1924. While the newer flour mill remains in operation today, the elevator itself was idled in the early 1960's and is presently under the ownership of the Archer-Daniels-Midland Company who have stated their intention to demolish the 113 year old structure.
