The bridge was created by an Act of Parliament in 1772. This is one of the 8 privately owned river crossings in Britain located by River Ure near Linton-on-Ouse. Unless a toll is paid there is a 25 mile round trip.

The bridge is also referred to as Boat Lane Bridge as it is on Boat Lane.
