This looks like a lovely place. I don't understand why they started building on the water when there is all that land around them.

About 75% of all villagers are living on the water. Another ~25% have houses on the land.

Traditionally, I believe their houses were built over the water to stop enemy tribes from getting to them. Because their enemy tribes were also from in-land, they didn't know how to swim. I think houses were built over the water also to stop sorcerers (vada) from getting to them.

I just live a few Kilometers from Tubuseria and our Church, City Mission New Life Church, has 50 or so men, women and children who attend from the village. We city Mission New Life Church pick up church members every Sunday in a truck and do outreaches in the village with music, messages and free clothing. We also have a private primary school where some village children attend.

Tubusereia is one of a number of Motu tribal villages, all of which were originally built over water on stilts. Others include Boera, Porebada, Hanuabada and others. The Motu people were not the original inhabitants - they seem to have been the Koitabu, who owned the land. By some arrangement, centuries ago, the Motu people obtained garden land adjacent their villages, but their villages remained over water - whether by choice or necessity is unclear. The Motu people are well known historically for their clay pot production and their trading voyages (Hiri) in their huge multi-hull canoes, known as Lagatoi (or lakatoi), a name often misapplied to outrigger canoes (vanagi). They travelled NW into the Gulf region to trade pots for sago.

Population boom too be over at least 12000 people and houses count at least over 1200. This is not including people moving out to resettle and make new communities along the hi-way such as Taora, Mirigeda, Sebore, Gohu, etc. etc. etc.
