pier, historic landmark
While today the Fall River State Pier operates as a business location, offering a shipping point for the city, it was once home to the Fall River Line, the main ferry service between Boston and New York City. From Boston, people would take the Old Colony Line (founded by Colonel Borden, owner of the Fall River Iron Works) to Fall River, disembarking at the pier and then boarding the luxurious steamboats which made their way between stops on the way to New York City and a pier on the Hudson.
The line was in operation from 1847 to 1937, when rail service, bus service and the Cape Cod Canal finally overtook the line.
