This is the Manchester Arena, an indoor arena situated on Hunts Bank and connected to the Mancehester Victoria Railway Station. It has a seating capacity of 21,000, with 30 luxury boxes and 4 party suites.
The arena was opened in 1995, having been built at a cost of £52,000,000 and designed by Ellerbe Becket, Ove Arup & Partners, and Austin-Smith-Lord. It was initially named NYNEX Arena, under sponsorship by NYNEX, until 1998, when it was renamed Manchester Evening News Arena, when it was sponsored by the Manchester Evening News. That sponsorship ended in 2011, and in 2013, a new sponsorship deal with Phones 4u resulted in the arena's renaming to Phones 4u Arena.
The Manchester Arena hosts around 250 music and sporting events annually. Among the events the arena hosted are the boxing and netball events of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and the 2008 FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships.
On 22 May 2017 following a concert by pop music artist Ariana Grande, an suicide bomber killed 22 and injured 119 people.
