In 1959 Hancock AFB became the location of the first SAGE Division, (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment), NORAD's system to detect bomber invasion during the Cold-War.

A typical SAGE "cube" was a heavy windowless concrete structure of about four of five stories. The combat center contained radar tracking systems that included some of the largest computers ever built requiring cooling towers for the generators and the air conditioned environment.

Hancock AFB was officially closed in 1981.
