Pea Hill Creek Country Store and Family Restaurant (Gasburg, Virginia)C. B. King General Merchandise: 1870 - 1935
Built and operated by John James King after the end of the Civil War, the store was renamed C. B. King General Merchandise when John's son, Charles B. King, became the proprietor in 1896. At the time, the store was considered the largest and most up to date in Brunswick County and sold groceries, dry goods, men's and women's clothing, shoes and caskets. A millinery shop was located on the second floor. C. B. King General Merchandise proudly served the community until 1935, when it was forced to close as a result of the Great Depression. Jim Halley and Huyen Bui have cleaned up and reopened this venerable establishment as The Pea Hill Creek Country Store. It is part antique store, part museum, with a very good lunch counter and just a dash of karaoke, a delightful change from the run-of-the-mill roadside attraction.
