An unincorporated early modern neighborhood of West Island, Thorndale was established in the late 1950's, making it one of the earliest modern housing developments in suburban Montreal. Its name came from early English settlers that saw many thorn bushes growing in the vicinity, however there is also a legend of Vikings settlers as well. Stones with runic symbols, the most prominent rune being THORN (Old and Middle-English for "TH" sound) were discovered there. Main arteries are Rue Ste-Croix, Rue Acres and the well-treed Rue Oakwood.
