Central Park Zoo

USA / New Jersey / West New York /

This urban oasis attracts nearly a million visitors each year. The beginnings of this venue materialized as a venue for New Yorkers to abandon exotic animals starting the late 1800's which saw a bear tied to a tree. It became a ramshackle menagerie by 1934 and was remade by Robert Moses. A group of designers including Price, Embury, and Merkel remade a new campus. Landscaping was designed by Gilmore D. Clarke.

A major redesign in 1983–88, executed by the architectural firm of Kevin Roche, Dinkeloo, made the zoo less an animal prison and more an animal exhibit. The central feature of the original zoo, the sea lion pool, was retained and redesigned, but now the Central Park Zoo is home to an indoor rainforest, a leafcutter ant colony, a chilled penguin house and a Polar Bear pool. Most of the large animals were rehoused in larger, more natural spaces at the Bronx Zoo.
