Originally Mitchell's Pond, after Singleton Mitchell, who inherited the land through a number of generations of Mitchell's and Latham's. Landowner William Henry Hewlett purchased part of the Mitchell estate in the mid 1800's, operating mills and continuing to farm the land. After Hewlett's death, Warner M. Leeds purchased the property in 1906. Leeds was the brother of William B. Leeds, the "Tinplate King", both of the American Tin Plate Corporation.
