Lekeleke Burial Grounds

At the end of Ali'i Drive is the spot of a fierce 1819 battle between the traditionalists the royal forces. After the death of his father King Kamehameha, Liholiho was crowned king; shortly afterwards, as part of his desire to adopt modern ways, he ate at the table of women, thereby breaking an ancient kapu (taboo) system. Chief Kekuaokalani, who held traditional views about religious traditions and wanted to preserve the old ways, unsuccessfully challenged King Liholiho in battle here. Both sides at the Battle of Kuamo'o were armed with western rifles which contributed to over 300 killed. They are buried on these grounds in rectangular burial mounds that can be seen today.
