Umananda Temple (Peacock Island) (Guwahati)

India / Assam / Guwahati
 temple, island

constructed by TAI AHOM rulers of ASSAM

This small Island of the river Brahmaputra has a Siva temple.

The temple of Umananda is located on the Peacock Island (as named by some poetic British Administrator) in the middle of the river Brahmaputra at Guwahati. Country boats that are available at this place take the visitors to the island. The patch of land on which the temple has been built is known as Bhasmacala.

The temple of Umananda was built in 1694 A.D. by the Bar Phukan Garhganya Handique by the order of His Majesty Swargadeo Gadadhar Singh (1681- 1696), one of the ablest and strongest rulers of the Tai Ahom dynasty.

  • A riverine island with a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva - Umananda. The temple can be divided into two complexes, the new temple complex and the old one. The old temple has a sanctum sanctorium going few steps below the ground. I liked the old one. Theres a nice walk way circling the temple along the periphery of the island. One of the frequented place for LASA employees. Also provides a nice hideout for the couples. :-)
  • Good photos.....thanks my dear friend.
  • As per Vikramjit, who wrote 47 months a go - 'smallest River Island in Asia' and Prajnayan kranti - 'in fact smallest river island in world', are not the fact. At Sultangunge in Munger/Sahebgunge, Bihar; this type of small island could be seen. Thanks for this valuable page.
