Is not this the island where $700 million dollars worth of drugs (and a significant cache of small arms) were found in a private house?
In that case, only the housekeeper and other small fry were prosecuted.
The Mirror alleges that the house is owned by a White Trinidadian drug cartel (it is actually in the name of a company), and that the raid was the result of a tip-off from the rival Syrian-Trinidadian drug cartel in retaliation for some perceived slight (having to do with a previous drug bust).
This is the seamy side of Trinidad. There are a lot of powerful interests with immense sway on the government.
(One manifestation of this is the ever-high local property market which simply cannot be sustained by such a small cadre of wealth on the island. Money is very elusive here, and lot of people live lives that are not reflected in their tax returns--or in the reasonable business endeavors that can be seen.) |
