CELLULAR JAIL NATIONAL MEMORIAL (Port Blair)

India / Andaman and Nicobar Islands / Port Blair / Cellular Jail, 001

Cellular Jail is the "National Memorial", the prison which was built & used by the Britishers to detain Indian freedom fighters in the pre-independence era from 1895 on wards till Japanese occupied it during world war II. Initially there were 7 wings constructed here from 1895 till 1905. Total 693 cells were constructed here. Each cell faces the passage of that wing & back of other wing, so that prisoners could not see or communicate with each other. During World war II, 4 out of 7 wings were damaged or destroyed. Now only 3 of the original 7 wings of the huge structure remain and is open to public viewing.
Approach to every wing passes through Central Tower., so a single guard could keep watch on all 7 wings on that floor, also could keep watch or raise alarm from the top.
Inhuman torture given to the freedom fighter detainees is exhibited here, which brings tears in the eyes of visitors.
Two shows of Sound & Light, describing the history of this jail are conducted everyday here at 5:30 & 6:30 PM everyday. (This place being 1 - 1.5 hr ahead of Indian Standard time, sun sets much early here)
