Burnham Harbor was named for Daniel Burnham, an architect and urban planner who worked in Chicago around the turn of the 20th century. He was one of the Directors of the Columbian Exhibition (1893), and later developed a plan for Chicago's future growth and beautification.
The Burnham Plan included a series of manmade islands along the lakeshore. Northerly Island - which forms one side of Burnham Harbor - was the only island that was constructed.
