Former site of Fort Amsterdam, built by the Dutch in 1625 to secure the strategic location at the southern tip of Manhattan.
Surrendered to the English in 1664 and renamed Fort James. Later renamed Fort William, Fort Anne, and finally Fort George. Demolished in 1790.
