Flagey is a ship-shaped art deco building designed by Belgian architect Joseph Diongre in 1938 for the Belgian Radio Broadcasting Institute. It was one of the first radio broadcasting buildings in the world. Its conception took into account the stringent technical and acoustic requirements of the period and gained international recognition and attracted prominent musicians for concerts, festivals, and recording sessions. In 1974 the Belgian Radio Institute left the building. The building underwent complete renovation in 2002, and it has since re-opened to the public. It was named in honour of Eugène Flagey, mayor of Ixelles from 1935 to 1953, whose name has also been bestowed upon the square adjacent to the building.
