This is one of the major medical areas in Boston (the other two being the New England Medical Center and Massachusetts General
Hospital). The Longwood Medical Area, however, is the primary research medical center in the Boston area (and indeed in the Northeast
U.S.). The three major practicing hospitals in the area are Children's Hospital of Boston, Brigham-Women's Hospital, and Beth-Israel
Deaconess Medical Center. All three have extensive research activities. Also in the area is the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a large center
for cancer-related research and treatment worldwide. Finally, the hub of the research and medical education community is Harvard
Medical School (note that the main Harvard campus is in Cambridge - and increasingly Allston). Merck Pharmaceuticals Research
Laboratories is also in the Longwood Medical Area.
