 fort, hillfort

Simhagad meaning Lion's den (Marathi: सिंहगड), Previously called Kondana fort. It is located in the south of Pune city, Maharashtra, India, situated on a hill which rises 800 meters above the surroundings. The fort's location has been strategically important since at least the 14th century and has been the site of many important battles.

One most famous battles was the recapturing of the fort by one important martyr of Swarajya Tanaji Malusare. Tanaji is believed one of core true companions who established Swarajya led by Chhatrapati Shivaji in 17th century.

Its interesting to see Tanaji's tomb, bungalows of Lokmanya Tilak and famous Marathi Poet G.D. Madgulkar, Dev Take giant tank with sweet and chilling water. Sweet curd, Buttermilk, Kanda bhaji and Zunaka-Bhakari available on this fort. The tomb of third Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj is less known but most important landmark on this fort.(vidyadhar.phadatare@gmail.com)

  • worth seeing place. one can imagine how it was difficult to reach and build fort on hilltop. great!
  • history is great, no doubt, but the present condition is shameful. people and the govt agencies hav spoiled the place. no sence of patriotism and respect towards the great worriors.
  • This is a fort where first time i saw so many local food vendor inside the fort. U can get Zunka, Bhakar, Curd, Cucumber, Chatni, pineapple etc..Although i ud go only for fresh fruits.. Dont eat near car parking .. Go inside the fort and get village like sitting..
  • Approach road is unsafe: full of potholes, no safety kerb wall at stretches, narrow to pass 2-four wheelers, steep-sharp turnings, in case of emergency no help is available, on top - insufficient parking space, cars parked haphazardly on road near fort. Better avoid visiting on Thu & week ends. Though local administration charges 50bucks for cars & 20 for 2-wheelers. Food is so-so.
