 pipeline, inlet, onshore/coastal pumping station

These twin intake gates are part of a pair of underground conduits that run under under the City of Niagara Falls to the Niagara Power Project facility roughly 4 miles North of Niagara Falls. Completed in 1961, the intakes provide up to 375,000 gallons of water per second from the Niagara River to be diverted to the Robert Moses Hydroelectric Power Plant. The intakes are equipped with grates to filter out large fish, ice and other debris and keep such from entering the conduits. The water enters through two 700 foot intakes that extend out underwater into the river. Each of the two above-ground structures houses a 400 ton vertical life gate that is 45 feet wide and 60 feet high.
