Torony

Village in County Vas, in the Szombathely region. Inhabintants: 1611 (2001). The hamlets Torony and Ondód were united to form one village in 1950.
The name of the village means "tower" - it refers to a watchtower of the Roman Era the exact place of which is unknown now.
Torony was recorded in 1409, and Ondód in 1288. In 1910 Torony had 455 and Ondód 768 inhabitants. During the second World War many Romas (Gypsies) from Ondód were carried off to Nazi concentration camps - they have a memorial tablet in the centre of the village.
The church was dedicated to Virgin Mary.
The Esterházy Hall was built in the 19th century, later it was owned by the Pick family. After the second world war it was used as an elementary school.
