The Eilat base was founded in 1951 and has been in charge of the Red Sea Naval zone of the Israeli navy since 1981, when the Red Sea Naval command center was withdrawn from Sharm el-Sheikh according to the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. The emblem of Eilat naval base (above) represents the red roofs of Eilat.

A main focus of the work of the base forces is the patrol and inspection of the thousands of tourist pleasure craft, operating in the warm waters of the Gulf of Aqaba off the coast of Eilat, which is Israel's premier warm water tourist resort, in the on going efforts in counter terrorism.
