Ellipse Meridian Stone: A small square stone set in the ground at the exact center of the Ellipse. The stone marks the meridian recommended by Thomas Jefferson as a prime meridian for the United States. The meridian now traverses or passes near the centers of the Jefferson Memorial, the Jefferson Pier, the White House and 16th Street NW. The stone bears the inscripition "Meridian 1890".
